Program Note:
The majestic Peregrine Falcon has been described in archival records as “a Royal bird, more armed by its courage than by its claws.” Various peregrine species live throughout the world. One particular type of peregrine falcon has been identified as migrating from the North American eastern seaboard, as far north as Greenland, to southern South America. In 1993, a single falcon was tracked from Assateague Island, Virginia to North West Argentina. The journey took three months. This work, Peregrine, written for guitarist and Latin American music specialist José Lezcano, takes us on a musical journey that employs arching melodies over a harmonic groundwork, an apt analogy for the royal peregrine as it soars over earth and soil, linking two important musical and geographic societies.
