Program note:
Just as I was working on this piece, Mourning Dew, I learned of two people in my life who had been diagnosed with terminal illnesses. My Uncle Jay passed away during the writing of the piece and my dear friend, Connie, would pass away shortly thereafter, so my compositional process was interwoven with all of the sorrow that accompanies such a time. With this mental state surrounding my work, its writing occurred more quickly and organically than usual, with much self-reflection and mystical thought. The resulting composition is not just inward and melancholy; it also contains elements of hope and optimism. Though we struggle through hard times, ultimately, we are fortunate to be surrounded in our lives by love, friendship, and family.
