Program Notes:
This piece, originally written in 2004 for the Newton Symphony Orchestra and revised in 2013, makes use of a pandiatonic landscape that depicts the episodes and events of an excursion into the wilderness. Through each section, individual instruments have their chance to shine, as the timbral landscapes twist and turn. An initial section layers solo instruments across a vast build-up toward a dramatic tutti, which then gives way to a section of contrapuntal textures that represent topographical contours and changing scenery along the route. Eventually, a grand build-up gives way to a denouement that concludes our adventure.
