A Light Exists in Spring (2020)
PURCHASE SCORE
A Light Exists in Spring
soprano duet // 1:36
Premiere: 2020 (virtual)
Commissioned by Margot Rood
Program Note:
This work was written during the Covid pandemic as a duet for Margot Rood, who recorded both parts and released the song on social media in May 2020. The score is written for two sopranos, a cappella, and could be performed live by two people. This playful, contrapuntal setting of an Emily Dickinson poem contains subtle dissonances amidst an imitative, polyphonic texture that is appealing to both singer and listener.
Texts:
A Light Exists in Spring
by Emily Dickinson
A Light exists in Spring
Not present on the Year
At any other period —
When March is scarcely here
A Color stands abroad
On Solitary Fields
That Science cannot overtake
But Human Nature feels.
