Duet for two pianos (4 hands, 2 pianos) // 5 minutes

Premiere: April 2007

Program Note:
The original impetus for this short work for two pianos came from a song by Ani DiFranco; the middle section, with its rhythmic vitality, can be traced to this unlikely source of compositional inspiration. The piece begins with undulating chords in one piano and the hint of a somewhat ethereal melody in the other. Before the airy melody can be properly grasped, it is interrupted by the rhythmic, driving texture which plays itself out for a few minutes before settling back into the original motif. This time the motif expands into a recognizable melody, juxtaposed by a floating triplet pattern, and builds in intensity until the earlier rhythmic material interrupts and becomes integrated into the melody. At this point the piece comes to a close, having resolved its conflict.
